Firenze, 4 agosto 2016 ― Ricordando che oggi ricorre l’anniversario della nascita di Percy Bysshe Shelley (Field Place, presso Horsham nel Sussex, 4 agosto 1872).
La Mutevolezza
Noi siamo come nuvole che velano la luna a mezzanotte;
così irrequiete sfrecciano, e sfavillano, e fremono, striando
l’oscurità radiosamente! ― eppure subito
la notte si richiude attorno, e le cancella:
o come lire dimenticate, le cui dissonanti corde
rendono a ogni vario soffio del vento una risposta varia,
alla cui fragile struttura nessuna nuova vibrazione apporta
un tono o una modulazione pari all’ultimo.
Noi riposiamo ― e un sogno ha la potenza di avvelenarci il sonno.
Ci alziamo ― e un pensiero errante può inquinare il giorno.
Sentiamo, concepiamo o ragioniamo, ridiamo o piangiamo,
ci disperiamo, o gettiam via ogni affanno:
è tutto uguale! ― Sia una gioia o un dolore,
la via della sua dipartita è sempre aperta:
l’ieri dell’uomo non può mai essere simile al domani;
niente nel mondo può durare, eccetto la Mutevolezza.

Mutability
We are as clouds that veil the midnight moon;
How restlessly they speed, and gleam, and quiver,
Streaking the darkness radiantly! ― yet soon
Night closes round, and they are lost for ever:
Or like forgotten lyres, whose dissonant strings
Give various response to each varying blast,
To whose frail frame no second motion brings
One mood or modulation like the last.
We rest. ― A dream has power to poison sleep;
We rise. ― One wandering thought pollutes the day;
We feel, conceive or reason, laugh or weep;
Embrace fond woe, or cast our cares away:
It is the same! ― For, be it joy or sorrow,
The path of its departure stili is free:
Man’s yesterday may ne’er be like his morrow;
Nought may endure but Mutability.
