Tu che sei pura musica perché ti ascolti con tristezza?

Tu che sei pura musica perché ti ascolti con tristezza?
La dolcezza non fa mai guerra alla dolcezza,
la gioia si nutre di gioia:
perché sembri amare ciò che non gradisci
e spesso accogli con piacere la tua noia?
Se gli armoniosi suoni di note intonate,
in perfetto assieme ti offendono l’orecchio,
questo denuncia in te una mente confusa,
nella pochezza delle parti, incapace di goder l’insieme.
Guarda invece come ogni corda, unitamente a un’altra
vibra su ognuna in ordine amoroso,
sembran quasi padre, figlio e felice madre,
che tutti insieme un sol suono cantano:
ebbene queste mute voci riunite in un solo coro
in armonia dicono: da solo tu non sarai nessuno.

Mark how one string, sweet husband to another.
Strikes each in each by mutual ordering,
Resembling sire and child and happy mother,
Who, all in one, one pleasing note do sing:
