Firenze, 25 gennaio 2023 – Ricordando che domenica scorsa ricorreva l'anniversario della nascita di George Gordon Byron (Londra, 22 gennaio 1788).
Passa radiosa, come la notte tersa
Passa radiosa, come la notte tersa
dai cieli stellati;
il meglio del buio e del fulgore
si incontra nei suoi occhi
addolciti a quella tenera luce
che il cielo nega allo sforzo del giorno.
Un'ombra in più, un raggio in meno, avrebbero
in parte guastato la grazia senza nome
che si posa sui capelli neri
o illumina il volto con dolcezza,
dove pensieri limpidi
svelano pura e preziosa dimora.
Su quella guancia, sopra quella fronte serena
sorrisi e colori parlano di pacifici giorni,
di un intelletto in armonia con tutto,
di un cuore che ama innocente!
She Walks in Beauty
She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express,
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.
And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!
